I usually use the last two practices to go over the defensive and offensive sets wewill be using in the game. No real conditioning. They should already be in condition bt then. Definately free throw, as many as possible. Then I talk to the kids at the last one for mental preparation.

Coach Stacey - we'll be having our AAU tryouts for our 6th grade in the next week. Is there any special drills or ideas that you can share with me to help determine which kids should have the opportunity to make the squad?

BigCookFamily- Thanks for the post.
I believe the nucleus of a team starts from within. Drills will develop, personalities will create foundation. The question is whether the foundation is solid.
First thing I want to do is understand the fact that I am prepared to loose any player at any time. Any one player has the potential to destroy team chemistry.
Secondly, I need to know my own commitment and exactly what I'm looking to accomplish with the team. If your commitment and vision don't match the players, you'll be in for a series of headaches.
When putting together a new team the third thing I want to determine is the commitment of each player to themselves. I need to know what they are looking to accomplish in the future through playing for the team. Most kids are have an idea where they're looking to take their basketball life at that age. I do this so that they can dictate the level of their dedication for the rest of their time with the team. If a player says he is 100% committed to becoming a better player and attending college. That decision lends to a standard of commitment. Which means that they will conduct themselves well on the court, listen to instructions, give 100% in practice, do well with academics, and whatever else is appropriate. I believe if we let the kids set the bar for their performance, all coaches have to do is see that they adhere to it. In addition to their commitment should come disciplinary actions for missing the bar. And this must be agreed by kids and parents alike. In writing if possible. (I have commitment agreements if you need them emailed) Some would say, "What does this have to do with basketball?". Well, I'll tell you. If a coach doesn't have complete control of his/her players, there will not have control of what happens on the floor. I'm sure you have seen situations on the court where at crucial times kids don't listen to what a coach is saying and will go on their own agenda. That comes from lack of control from the coach.
You asked about drills. But I believe drills are secondary to the makeup of a team. You can pick the most talented kids at the tryout because they drilled well and end up with several uncontrollable cast members. In a tryout I find that just running the kids in a free court setting will expose the players that have the potential to be drilled. there are kids that you'll find with raw talent that have not have any formal training. But through numerous drill training they become the cream of the crop. (That also if the commitment is there) I'd be more incline to look for committed players with an instinct for the game and drill them in the ways needed to preform in the manner the team needs them. Rather than send them through a bunch if drill, not knowing who they are and what I'm going to get out of them.
And lastly, You must have the same commitment and understanding from the parents in regards to their actions within the team activities. (I also have parental conduct agreements) Parent should also be accountable for their action if it affect team chemistry.
Remember, it's not always about who has the best crossover or shot when they don't know when to use it.

WOW!!! I never thought of it thar way. What do you mean by loosing a player? And what would you do if the team is already formed? Thanks, interesting perspective.

Basketball425- In answer to your first question... Are you willing to keep a player that does not have the same commitment as the rest of the team? If not, you must be prepared to not have any one player on the team due to negative influence.
If you have already chosen you squad, it's not too late. I would pull them aside as a team with their parents in attendance. Speak openly in regards to what you expect out of the team and the parents player speak to the group out loud and tell everyone of his basketball goals and his/her personal commitment to the team to do their part in making the team the best it can be. At last, let the parents speak individually on what they plan to do to assist the team accomplish their goals.(as we all know there are team management issue everyone can help with)
Once everyone as verballed their intentions to support the team/ success. It's time for everyone to be held accountable. From the practice court to the home.
I say all this with the assumption the person coaching actually knows how to teach and lead a team.
